Halloween Parade 2025: some politics and a lot of artistry

By Lucy Komisar

One of the few places in America where free speech is glorified (I didn’t see any ICE agents handcuffing marchers), this year’s Greenwich Village Halloween Parade still had only a handful of political themes compared to the past. A yellow-haired prison orange-suited Trump, a couple of blow-up dolls labeled Frog and Ampifa (a misspelling I am sure) and U.S.A. v Epstein (was that satiric?)

The fellow holding the Free Soybeans sign said parade watchers didn’t understand it. It means that after Trump folded before China’s economic power (Trump says he won), China will now buy soybeans from desperate American farmers Trump almost threw under the bus instead of from Brazil. And these anti-Hochul marchers are against the governor’s support for fracked gas pipelines.

Our bloody dysfunctional Medical System Industry is always good for a laugh.
The theme this year was eating, note the chefs, the food spreads, and fork. And a barbecue chef.

The parade started decades ago with puppets and they are still here.

And people who remind us of art, including artist James Haggarty as Van Gogh’s 1887 “Self-portrait with Straw Hat.” Next to the original. And of course always Edvard Munch’s “The Scream.”

There were big groups marching, dancing, playing music.

But individuals and small groups were most exciting as they show what people without organizations and money can do. Just couples or a few friends.

And individuals (plus a dog.)

Jeanne Fleming is artistic and producing director of the parade.

This year the spider on the Jefferson Market Library climbed around the tower, courtesy of a puppeteer on a high balcony. Seems that every year the parade gets better. Kudos to Artistic and Producing Director Jeanne Fleming who was on the street watching over it all.

At home, I found doorman Tommy keeping the place secure from departing threat-costumed parade-goers. No, he doesn’t always dress that way!

Thank you Lucy! It was fun to hang out a little with you this year!!! And, not a lot of politics. I think people are sick of it and just want to have a night out with others and have some fun!
